What You Will Learn
Meetings with parents in a variety of professional settings – such as schools, mental health clinics, and private practice – can be positive, productive experiences. When professionals and parents are actively working toward the best interest of the student, the results can be very helpful. But what happens when a parent is reluctant to work with the professionals? What if the parent is oppositional, resistant, or just plain angry toward the school, agency or professional?
When working with parents in these situations, professionals can become frustrated and eventually even sometimes personally "hooked" into a conflict with a parent. This can eventually result in an interaction between parent and professional that can cause both parties to lose sight of the child's best interests.
So what is behind this parent anger? Why are parents sometimes oppositional or resistant to professionals when they are merely trying to help the student? It is important that professionals understand the psychology behind such reactions in parents. Using key insights and strategies, professionals can stay "on track" as they interact with parents – always working to establish and maintain a collaborative relationship that keeps the student's needs in the forefront.
