What You Will Learn
Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) has been one of the most common mental/behavioral health challenges identified in the past ten years. Others erupt with the frustrations from this intense and energy-draining condition – displaying distracting behaviors that can be very challenging to educators and other professionals who work with youth.
This webinar will provide information and answers:
- Recognizing the challenges of bipolar disorder
- Prevention tools to help students manage
- Behavioral and emotional support processes
- Instructional strategies to maximize success
- Partnering with families

- Classroom issues
- Social and behavioral skills
Who Should Attend
- K-12 Classroom Educators
- Community Organization Workers
- School Counselors

In children and adolescents, bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder or Asperger’s syndrome. Unlike adults, the mood disturbance is usually continuous – a mixture of mania and depression. Children and adolescents suffering from bi-polar disorder experience rapid and severe cycling of moods, perhaps many times during the day – with few periods of wellness.
These students may appear inflexible and extraordinarily irritable. They may lose their temper, argue, defy, annoy or blame. They may be hyperactive, touchy, angry or spiteful. Some coping tools for educators include providing privacy and consistency, pre-planning, and giving relationship support. Those working with these youth need to understand the side effects of treatment and how to provide accommodations (such as reducing or deferring homework, maintaining a back-and-forth notebook between school and home, providing extended test time and practicing goal-setting with rewards, etc.) which can enable these students to flourish in a mainstream environment.
This informative 90-minute webinar will help you:
- Avoid Power Struggles
- Understand the Stages of Anger
- Respond when being attacked
- Practice careful communication
- Teach anger and impulse control skills
- Utilize creative emotion-reducing tactics
- Implement strategies to prevent outbursts and meltdowns
