What You Will Learn

Childhood and adolescent depression is a serious mental health problem that affects 1 in 33 children – as well as an alarming 1 in 8 adolescents. The bottom line is that depression not only gets in the way of normal functioning but can also be life-threatening. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in teenagers.

It has been said that youth depression is the worst kind of depression. This is because children and teens have not fully developed their coping skills, and they typically have limited control over their environment.

Counselor, author and nationally known presenter Tip Frank will help educators and other professionals answer critical questions regarding depression such as:

  • What does depression look like in today’s youth and what specific signs of depression should school officials and other professionals watch for?
  • What are the 3 most common mistakes professionals make in dealing with students suffering from depression?
  • If one suspects a child or teen is depressed, what should an educator do?
  • How does one get depressed?
  • What are signs that a youth might be suicidal and what do you do if a youth is suicidal?
  • How should professionals approach parents whose child may be depressed?
  • What is the latest research regarding a connection between depression medications and suicide?
  • What can educators do to help youth who are recovering from depression?
  • What treatments for depression work best?
  • What are the legal ramifications and responsibilities when professionals work with students who may be depressed?
