What You Will Learn

Often bullying and other forms of relational aggression take place in the presence of a group of relatively uninvolved bystanders.  With girls’ increased sensitivity to relationships, it can be the bully's ability to create the illusion that he or she has the support of bystanders that is so devastating to the target.

Bystanders are often unable to recognize the true cost that silence has to both the girl who is being targeted and to the group.  In many bullying incidents, bystanders encourage bullying by teasing the victim, snickering, laughing or egging on the bully.  In other incidents, bystanders simply do nothing.

There are a wide variety of reasons why girls choose not to intervene.  They may simply be amused.  They may lack empathy.  They may worry that they will make the situation worse.  Or they may worry that they will risk becoming the next victim.  But if the bully faces no obstruction from the people around, it gives her permission to continue.

Many bystanders don’t agree with bullying practices, but feel unempowered to intervene on behalf of the victim.  These two 90-minute research-based webinars will enable educators and other professionals to increase awareness and to build empathy with girls K-12.  From that foundation, girls can be given specific skills and tools to become interveners and defenders.
